Spondylopathy

Spondylopathy

Spondylosis is a degenerative condition of the spine that primarily affects the joints and intervertebral discs. It is commonly seen in the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) regions, often resulting from the natural aging process. Known as spinal osteoarthritis, it involves the progressive wear of the spine's structures, leading to pain, stiffness, and sometimes limited movement.

The main cause of spondylosis is aging. As we age, intervertebral discs lose water and shrink, increasing pressure on spinal joints, leading to the formation of osteophytes (bone spurs).

Other contributing factors include spinal injuries, improper posture, genetic predisposition, repetitive activities, heavy lifting, and obesity. These factors can accelerate spinal wear.

Symptoms include localized pain, stiffness (worse in the morning or after inactivity), radiating pain to the upper or lower limbs, and symptoms resembling sciatica. Cervical spondylosis may also cause headaches, and compressed nerves can lead to muscle weakness, tingling, and numbness.

The diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation and imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, and CT scans. Treatment depends on symptom severity and impact on life. Conservative treatments include medications (anti-inflammatories, pain relievers, and muscle relaxants) and physical therapy to improve mobility. Orthopedic devices and lifestyle changes like maintaining a healthy weight and exercising can also help manage symptoms.

While spondylosis is age-related, good posture, regular exercise, and avoiding excessive spinal load can delay its progression. Regular medical check-ups and physiotherapy can improve quality of life and slow the disease's progression.

HPA Saúde provides specialized care and advanced treatments for spondylosis, offering an integrated approach to relieve pain and restore spinal mobility.
