Flashing Lights

Flashing Lights

Flashes or photopsies may appear as flashing lights or lightning in the field of vision. Some people liken them to "seeing stars" after being hit in the head. The intermittent presence of bright flashes can last for weeks or even months. The flashes occur when the vitreous pulls on the retina.

As people age, it is common to experience occasional bright flashes. Any new episodes of floaters or light flashes should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist, although in 90% of patients, these phenomena are completely harmless and do not require any treatment.
