Thalassemia

Thalassemia

Thalassemia is an inherited disorder affecting haemoglobin production in red blood cells, leading to premature RBC destruction and anaemia. This results from genetic mutations impacting haemoglobin's globin chains.

There are two main types: alpha-thalassemia and beta-thalassemia, varying in severity from mild forms without significant symptoms to severe anaemia causing growth delays and enlarged spleens.

Diagnosis involves blood tests like a complete blood count and specific haemoglobin tests. Treatment depends on severity, including blood transfusions, iron-reducing medications, or bone marrow transplants for severe cases. Regular follow-ups are essential to manage the condition and ensure a better quality of life.
