World Stroke Day

Stroke is the leading cause of death in Portugal.

A stroke results from damage to brain cells, which either die or cease to function normally due to a lack of oxygen and nutrients following a blockage of blood flow (ischaemic stroke) or due to a brain haemorrhage (haemorrhagic stroke).

Here are some foods that can help you stay healthier:

AVOCADO
This fruit is rich in potassium and monounsaturated fats, which promote "good" cholesterol instead of LDL. Maintaining cholesterol levels within recommended values reduces the risk of heart disease, such as stroke.

SPINACH
This leafy vegetable is high in fibre, vitamin K, calcium, magnesium, and iron. When eaten with dairy products, the body is able to absorb a heart-specific antioxidant. This antioxidant is known to reduce inflammation and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

PUMPKIN SEEDS
Pumpkin seeds are highly nutritious, rich in fibre, and help regulate blood sugar levels. Additionally, they possess antioxidant properties that help reduce inflammation, thereby decreasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

POTATOES
Potatoes are rich in potassium. By consuming this tuber and keeping potassium levels balanced, you are contributing to the prevention of hypertension and, ultimately, stroke.

WALNUTS
Walnuts provide a good amount of omega-3 fats. Studies have shown that consuming this food in moderation is responsible for lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
