Orthopaedics HPA at the European Forefront of Lower Limb Arthroplasty

The Orthopaedics Group of the Hospital Particular do Algarve has taken another significant step and positioned itself at the forefront of robotic surgery for hip and knee prostheses by performing, at the Gambelas unit in Faro, two joint replacement surgeries using the surgical navigation system – CORI and the new digital tensioner.

The introduction of this technology, which stands out for its high level of precision and innovation, marks a national debut in hip arthroplasty and a European milestone with the use of a new auxiliary instrument in knee arthroplasty.

This surgical navigation system has been used by the Orthopaedics Group of the Hospital Particular do Algarve since 2023 for robotic knee prosthesis surgery and has over a hundred successful cases.

In January 2025, GO HPA became the first in Europe to use the digital ligament tensioner, an instrument that allows for perfecting this technique in terms of precision, rigor, and safety, thus contributing to increased functionality and patient satisfaction levels.

This technology replaces what was previously done manually, offering an objective and consistent measurement of the tension to be applied. In other words, it allows for the personalized positioning of the knee ligaments at their ideal tension.

The HPA Health Group has made continuous investments in quality and innovation, currently being a national reference center for robotic surgery of the lower limb, reaffirming its commitment to the excellence of patient care.

Navigation System - CORI

CORI is a surgical navigation system that combines a 3D model of the patient's anatomy, imaging technology, and navigation algorithms to guide the surgeon during surgery. When performing joint replacement, CORI provides a real-time view of the bone and joint structures, allowing the procedure to be performed with maximum precision. The system provides a more personalized approach, adapted to each patient's anatomical needs, resulting in less pain, a faster recovery, and a significant improvement in long-term outcomes.

Advantages for Patients

Precision and Personalization: Adapting the procedure to the specific anatomical characteristics of each patient results in a more precise alignment of the prostheses and improves their functionality and durability.

Faster Recovery: The minimally invasive approach reduces the impact on surrounding tissues, allowing for a more comfortable post-operative period and faster recovery.

Fewer Complications: The rigor and precision provided by this technology reduce the risk of post-operative complications.
