Cardiac Arrhythmias: Understand What They Are and How to Prevent Them

What are Arrhythmias?

Cardiac arrhythmias are disorders of the heart's rhythm that can affect the way the heart beats and its function. These disturbances occur when the electrical impulse that controls the heartbeat does not follow its "usual path", resulting in irregular, very fast, or very slow beats. Under normal conditions, the heart beats in a regular pattern, but in arrhythmias, the beats are irregular, disrupting blood flow and the heart’s efficiency.

Types of Arrhythmias

There are various types of arrhythmias, which are mainly classified according to the part of the heart affected and the speed of the heart rate. Some of the most common include atrial fibrillation, characterised by irregular and rapid beats in the heart’s upper chambers, and ventricular tachycardia, which occurs when the heart beats rapidly in the lower chambers. Bradycardia, on the other hand, happens when the heart beats more slowly than usual, potentially leading to symptoms like fatigue and fainting. Additionally, extrasystoles, which are extra heartbeats, can be felt as a pause or irregular beat in the chest.

Common Symptoms

The manifestation of arrhythmias can vary depending on the type and intensity. The most common symptoms include:

  • Feeling of a "strong heartbeat" in the chest;
  • Dizziness or fainting;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Excessive fatigue;
  • Chest pain.

Moreover, other factors may increase the risk of developing arrhythmias, including:

  • Pre-existing heart conditions (such as heart failure or coronary artery disease);
  • High blood pressure;
  • Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption;
  • Advanced age;
  • Family history of heart disease;
  • Excessive caffeine or stimulant consumption.

How to Prevent?

Although not all arrhythmias can be prevented, several measures can help reduce the risk, such as adopting a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

Additionally, it is important to control blood pressure and cholesterol, avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine intake, and refrain from smoking. Regular heart check-ups are also essential, especially for those with a family history of heart disease.

These actions significantly contribute to maintaining good cardiovascular health and preventing complications associated with arrhythmias.

Cardiac arrhythmias are conditions that require attention and, in many cases, specialised treatment. The HPA Saúde Group is equipped to diagnose, treat, and monitor patients with arrhythmias, offering personalised solutions to ensure a healthier life without complications.

If you experience symptoms of arrhythmia or identify with the risk factors, consult one of our specialists for a detailed evaluation and the appropriate treatment.
