Adult Acne: A Common but Underestimated Dermatological Issue

Although acne is often associated with adolescence, many people continue to struggle with this condition into adulthood. Adult acne can either be a continuation of teenage acne or a late-onset condition, affecting particularly women due to hormonal factors related to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or menopause.

The primary cause of adult acne is hormonal imbalance, which stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce excess oil. This excess oil, combined with dead skin cells, clogs the pores and promotes the proliferation of bacteria, leading to the appearance of lesions such as blackheads, pimples, and, in more severe cases, painful cysts.

Stress is also an aggravating factor, as it triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can increase oil production. Additionally, the use of inappropriate cosmetics and environmental factors, such as pollution, can worsen the situation, further compromising skin health.

The impact of adult acne extends beyond aesthetics. Often, the condition is associated with psychological effects such as anxiety, low self-esteem, and even depression. Irregular healing can also leave permanent scars, making early and appropriate treatment essential to prevent complications.

Treating adult acne requires a personalised approach, starting with a detailed assessment of lifestyle, skincare routines, and possible underlying conditions. Therapeutic options include topical medications with retinoids, oral antibiotics, or hormonal therapies. In severe cases, isotretinoin may be recommended, but always under medical supervision.

In addition to medical treatments, choosing appropriate skincare products is crucial. Gentle cleansing, proper hydration, and the use of sunscreen help control symptoms and prevent outbreaks. Avoiding picking at lesions is also vital to minimise the risk of scarring.

At the HPA Health Group, we have dermatology specialists who offer an integrated and up-to-date approach to treating adult acne. Our priority is to restore not only the health of your skin but also your confidence and self-esteem, providing solutions tailored to your individual needs.
